We’ve done lineups in fielding position order. We’ve done alphabetical lineups. Now, how about lineups with last names that all begin with the same letter?
Well, there has never been a batting order with all nine guys starting with the same letter. But there HAVE been two games with seven similarly-surnamed fellows. Both games featured the same team, in the same season, as follows:
On August 20, 1938, St. Louis Cardinals manager Frankie Frisch offered up this fine collection to go up against the Cincinnati Reds in the first game of a double-header:
Terry Moore CF
Stu Martin 2B
Pepper Martin RF
Joe Medwick LF
Johnny Mize 1B
Don Gutteridge 3B
Lynn Myers SS
Herb Bremer C
Max Macon P
11 days later, in the nightcap of another double-header, Frisch again had seven M-monikered players in his lineup, with Bill McGee toeing the rubber rather than Max Macon.
And that’s the best any team has done . . .
So we still have a while to go before “nine guys named Robinson.”
