The September 1st callups are here . . . fresh-faced fellows getting rewarded for a good season in the minors and getting a chance to show their club what they might be able to provide in 2013. But before we dive into that and the pennant races, let’s check in again on the league leaders for the annual “Pi Young Award“.
First up . . . the American League/no innings requirement. We have three pitchers with .04 of the magic number. At 3.16 is Neftali Feliz of Texas, leading two rookies, the White Sox Jose Quintana and the A’s Dan Straily.
In the AL “ERA qualifiers” group, someone from the Twins is actually doing something good! Its young hurler Scott Diamond, who is leading the Yankees’ Hiroki Kuroda and veteran Jake Peavy of the White Sox.
In the NL/no innings requirement, the Dodgers’ still-DLed Ted Lilly holds onto sole possession of 3.14-dom, with the Astros’ rookie Mickey Storey and the Nationals’ Cy Young candidate Gio Gonzalez each .04 off the lead.
For the NL ERA qualifiers, Gonzalez holds the top position, with the Giants Madison Bumgarner close behind at 3.07. Gonzalez’s teammate Stephen Strasburg edges into third at 3.05.
Here’s a gentle reminder that the VORG is holding a Pledge Drive.
