Infield Quartets with Most Games Started

Last time out I discussed the outfield trios with the most games started, inspired by the infield foursome of Garvey, Lopes, Russell and Cey. I decided to go further down the infielders rabbit hole by seeing who that Dodger group topped in terms of most games started.

Here are the top ten foursomes, with their first and last years playing together and total games started.  Notice how Dick Groat makes the list twice …

Steve Garvey Davey Lopes Bill Russell Ron Cey 1973 1981 833
Ernie Banks Glenn Beckert Don Kessinger Ron Santo 1965 1971 623
Hank Greenberg Charlie Gehringer Billy Rogell Marv Owen 1933 1937 474
Boog Powell Davey Johnson Mark Belanger Brooks Robinson 1967 1972 450
Gil Hodges Jackie Robinson Pee Wee Reese Billy Cox 1948 1953 430
Dick Stuart Bill Mazeroski Dick Groat Don Hoak 1959 1962 357
Bill White Julian Javier Dick Groat Ken Boyer 1963 1965 347

Lee May Tommy Helms Roger Metzger Doug Rader 1972 1974 344
Ferris Fain Pete Suder Eddie Joost Hank Majeski 1947 1952 332

And here are the “current” leaders as of the end of 2015:

  1. Garvey, Lopes, Russell, and Cey started 833 times and the Dodgers went 498-335, for a .598 winning percentage. That’s equal to a team going 97-65 over a season. On those occasions when at least one of them missed his start, the Dodgers were 306-267-1, which is a .534 clip. That works out to a team going 87-75. So having all four of them added 10 wins to the Dodgers per year.
