Pitching Appearances with More Ks than Outs

Last night, Craig Kimbrel got a four out save, and thanks to a wild pitch on a strikeout, managed to K five batters during his appearance. Followers of the VORG asked me if this was some sort of record for most Ks where the strikeouts exceeded the outs recorded.  It turns out it wasn’t a record, but it WAS the first “five Ks in a four-out appearance” in the Retrosheet era going back to 1913.

Here are the 97 instances of a pitcher recording more strikeouts than outs, sorted by most strikeouts:

1 thought on “Pitching Appearances with More Ks than Outs

  1. After taking the loss in the first game, Wilbur Wood came back to start (and lose) the second game of the 7/20/73 doubleheader as well. He went into the 1973 All-Star break with an 18-14 record. Unbelievable.

I want to find out what happened with Herm Holshouser in that July 27, 1930 game. He’s the only pitcher to record two more strikeouts than outs.
