Dial M (7 times) for a Record

Friend of the VORG Zack Raab set out a request to Jayson Stark and I:

… which referred to this tweet:

After wading through the Retrosheet gamelogs, I found close to 500 games in which one team featured a batting order with an R in every last name.

But that reminded me of this similar analysis, which looked for lineups with each batter’s last name starting with the same letter. The record turned out to be the letter “M”, with the St. Louis Cardinals having seven batters so surnamed. They accomplished the feat twice in 1938.

The first time was in the first game of a doubleheader on August 20th, as follows:

Cardinals
1 Terry Moore CF
2 Stu Martin 2B
3 Pepper Martin RF
4 Joe Medwick LF
5 Johnny Mize 1B
6 Don Gutteridge 3B
7 Lynn Myers SS
8 Herb Bremer C
9 Max Macon P

Then in the second game of a doubleheader on August 31st ….

Cardinals
1 Terry Moore CF
2 Stu Martin 2B
3 Pepper Martin RF
4 Joe Medwick LF
5 Johnny Mize 1B
6 Don Gutteridge 3B
7 Lynn Myers SS
8 Herb Bremer C
9 Bill McGee P
