Pitchers are Cities in the State Game is Played In

As so often is the case with a VORG topic, it started with a single tweet:

To which my hero Jayson Stark replied:

And then he sent out the “Bat Signal” for me:

So, using the Retrosheet gamelogs through 2016, and cross-referencing against a list of over 1,700 U.S. cities and towns, I found at least these six matchups where the first name of the opposing pitchers are each cities in the state the game was being played in, as follows:

DATE vteam hteam STATE VIS P HOME P
20150906 MIN HOU TEXAS Tyler Duffey Dallas Keuchel
20140405 ANA HOU TEXAS Tyler Skaggs Dallas Keuchel
19820421 BAL BOS MASS. Dennis Martinez Dennis Eckersley
19800716 KCA BOS MASS. Dennis Leonard Dennis Eckersley
19790420 KCA BOS MASS. Dennis Leonard Dennis Eckersley
19480613 BSN CIN OHIO Warren Spahn Kent Peterson

  1. This is awesome! I’m really surprised that there aren’t more instances of this, especially with a guy like Dallas Keuchel who has pitched in Houston 76 times and in Dallas another 9 times.
