Lourdes Gurriel’s Amazing Hit Streak

Toronto Blue Jays’ rookie outfielder Lourdes Gurriel is in the midst of an amazing streak. Gurriel, with all of 38 games of experience in the Majors, has an 11-game hit streak, and has collected at least two hits in every one of those games. In baseball history, this is only the seventh such streak of at least 11 games. As shown in the table below, the record is 13 games, set in 1923 by Rogers Hornsby.

(In case you were wondering, Joe DiMaggio‘s longest streak of two or more hits was a mere eight games.)

Given how unlikely it is for a neophyte like Gurriel to put together such a streak, I decided to see what the longest such streaks were for each member of the 3,000 hit club. I also included their longest overall hit streak. An asterisk next to the player’s name means their career started prior to 1908 (the earliest Baseball Reference data available for hit streak calculation), so their listed streaks might actually have been surpassed at some pre-1908 point in their career.
