Best Combined Winning Percentage for Top 2 Teams in League/Division

The Red Sox and Yankees are making a mockery of the American League East, with a healthy double-digit games lead over third place. As of the end of Saturday’s action, the Sox and Bronx Bombers have a combined winning percentage of .675 (129-62 overall record between the two teams). That would be good enough for … Read more

Same Team Has League Leader in Wins and Losses

On tonight’s Mets broadcast, Gary Cohen mentioned that the Nationals currently feature the National League leader in wins (Max Scherzer, with 12) and the National League leader in losses (Tanner Roark, with 11). He later noted that the last team to have such a distinction at the end of the season was the 1988 Minnesota … Read more

Largest Difference Between 2nd and 3rd Place Teams in a Season

VORG favorite Jayson Stark tweeted the following recently: This #RedSox-#Yankees series isn’t just epic. It’s historic. According to it’s the first time two teams with this good a win pct have met this late in a season since 9/2/54! That was #Yankees-#Indians. Wow — Jayson Stark June 29, 2018 … which got me … Read more

From 20-game Winner to 20-game Loser

A friend of mine asked me, after considering the 2016-7 fortunes of Rick Porcello, if anyone had ever lost 20 games the year after winning 20. This list meets that request, with the following exceptions: It doesn’t include those that won and lost 20+ games in the same season It doesn’t include those that lost … Read more

It Don’t Mean a Thing if You Don’t Win in Spring

Pitchers and catchers have reported to camps. Spring training is underway. Soon the first exhibition games in Florida and Arizona will commence.

I’m here to tell you that you should not worry if your team does not come out of spring training with a winning record. Using won-loss totals for both spring training and the regular season from 2006 through 2016, I calculated that there is a .216 correlation between the two (a correlation of 1.0 is a perfect positive relationship, while 0.0 means there is no relationship).

Why just last year, the Arizona Diamondbacks went 24-8 in February and March, and then proceeded to barely win three times as many games in the regular season (69-93). On the flip side, the Cubs “struggled” to an 11-19 spring mark, and then routed their division on their way to 103 regular season wins and an eventual World Series.

So here are the spring and regular season won-loss records for each team during each of the last 11 seasons, ranked by difference in winning percentage. Note the 2016 D’backs at the very top and the 2016 Cubs at the other end.

The Day’s Games are Home or Visitor Sweeps (or close to it)

On Tuesday, all 15 home teams won their games, a first in MLB history. That got the VORG wondering about other “sweeps”, by either the home or visiting teams, based on the number of games on a day. Thanks to the gamelogs from Retrosheet, here are the most wins on a single day by the … Read more

Hovering Around .500 All Season

Its been a trying year for the Yankees. They haven’t been able to establish any real momentum, as their longest winning streak is five games (done twice). However, they’ve never really gone into a prolonged tailspin, with their longest losing streak also encompassing five games (also done twice). As such, it shouldn’t be a surprise … Read more

There’s No Place Like Wherever We’re Not Playing

Since 1901, home teams have won 54% of all regular season games. But sometimes, the home/road split is quite extreme, in either direction. Its still pretty early in the 2014 season, but the Marlins and Diamondbacks are on record-setting paces for biggest home/road differentials, on differing sides of the coin. The Marlins have been one … Read more
